Windows 7 on the Acer Aspire One

I’ve been running Windows 7 for the last couple of months on my AAO with mixed results. At first it seemed to run fast enough, but recently it really seems to be a dog. Windows 7 has been optimized to run on a variety of systems, including netbooks with the Atom processor, however, the small and very slow SSD in my Acer Aspire One just doesn’t seem to cut it to run as well as I’d like.

Of all the operating systems that I’ve run so far, my very n-lite’d Windows XP install was probably the best and what I will likely reinstall soon. The original Linux Linpus was by far the fastest, but too limiting in the applications that I could run. What I would ultimately like to do is replace the SSD with an iPod hard drive and try re-installing Windows 7 on that (a 1.8 PATA HD while having slower read times, would have much faster write times than the AAO SSD) or maybe even just installing XP and have it run like I would expect.

I also have the SSD model of the Acer Aspire One and tried installing Windows 7 on it — BAD IDEA. Initially it was fine in Basic theme, but over time it would run out of space and take forever to load apps.

I was wondering, what kind of Nlite’d XP did you use? I’d like to install it on my Aspire One, because I’m using the default XP Pro at the moment.

I have done what you are talking about. I upgraded my AAO with a toshiba MK6008GAH 1.8″ 60GB drive, running Windows 7 Ultimate. Performance is just fine, but my main issues were lower battery life, heat (probably related to battery life as the fan was on much more), and keeping the drive secure (about 3 times I had to re-open her up, and re-secure/reconnect the drive).

I ended up replacing with a Kingspec 32GB 1.8″ PATA SSD drive, and haven’t looked back. Runs much cooler/quieter, battery life is back to normal, the drive is only a few grams, so the sticky pads hold it tight.

As regards performance, the drive is fast enough that readyboost refuses to work (it reports it wouldn’t add any performance increase over the SSD!)

I have the AAO with 8GB SSD. XP is even way too slow on it. I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 on it without any problems and found some tweaks to make it run faster. 9.10 kept crashing on me for some reason, so I am keeping 9.04 for now :-)

I have this Acer Aspire one. How easy is it to put an SSD inside?

I am not that good with screwdrivers – is it worth the risk? Also would it invalidate the warranty?

I put Windows 7 Home Premium on my Acer Aspire One with a 16gb SSD (14.9 formatted) and it works fine. Of course there are slowdowns when the SSD is being written to. I use 2 ea. 16gb SD cards for storage. I orignally put Win XP on mine (when I replaced Linux) but I never was able to get rid of the lag in access time that would just freeze the OS for minutes at a time. It drove me crazy. I also upgraded memory to 1.5 gb and replace my wireless card with an n card. Two things that I did do was remove Windows Explorer and Windows Media player/media center. Memory tweaks were not needed as Win 7 does a much better job. I am not a fan of Windows Explorer or Windows Media programs so there was no loss at with removing them. I still have 6.09 gb free out of my 14.9 gb and love the new operating system.

Update to my input – What I removed was Windows Internet Explorer 8 and Media Player and Media Center (not any Windows File Management programs). I use the program Maxthon2 as my browser and GOM player and SMPlayer for watching videos. Also formatted my hard drive to NTFS before a fresh install of Win 7 (not an upgrade). Also don’t waste your time with Win 7 Starter as it will not let you change your desktop background and has other stupid limitations. Hope this helps. Tom

    Hi,

I’m planing to buy an Acer Aspire 1 Netbook. The dealer said it comes with 1 gb ram. So I was wondering if tats enough.

If anyone has the same model, please tell me if its possible to play 2 facebook games e.g Farmville and fishville, smoothly at the same time in say Ubuntu or even Windows.

I realised on my desktop that these flash games are taking a lot of RAM. So this will be a great help.

I bought an Acer Aspire One AOA110 netbook last year. It came with 512MB RAM and an 8GB SSD drive an Linux with a free upgrade to windows XP Home.

I changed to an extended battery which gives me about 4,5 hours. I also replaced the SSD drive with a 80GB 1,8inch PATA disk and upgraded the RAM to 1,5GB. I also use a 16GB SD card for some data and software. (You cannot use the SD card space to install applications because it is not available when you boot and creates unpredicable results)

I run Windows 7 Ultimate and it works very well. I am using Office 2010 beta which also works very nicely.

I have disabled most of the Aero stuff and optimized the system and am very happy to use this as a supplimentary mchine for my full-size notebook when I travel or need mobility.

I get the following Windows 7 performance scores:
    Processor – 2,3
    Memory – 4,5
    Graphics – 2,1
    Gaming – 3,0
    Disk – 4,4

Overall score is 2,1 which is acceptable given the mobility.

I have noticed that the CPU is not great for multitasking and running lots of applications at the same time. If only your foreground application is busy, the performance is good. If your background applications are busy is slows the whole system down.

    Good luck.

    regards

    Andrew

I to have installed windows 7 to my aspire one netbook. Mine is the ZG5 model. I decided to use the Tiny7 version tho and it installed like a dream and runs like a dream. I’ve also found a good use out of the two Card reader slots on the aspire one. Because mine has only got an 8GB SSD inside which doesn’t leave you with much room after installing office and other software that you may need. I figured away of using a 16GB SD card as a second hard drive to install games and other bits of software directly to it. This has left me with enough room for windows to still run smoothly and given me an extra 16GB (Well 14GB truthfully) of storage : ) if anyone wants to know how to do this just comment. Have a good day guys.

Recently, I installed Windows 7 on my Aspire One A110 (512 MB RAM, 8 GB SSD) and it works great.

    Here’s what I did:
    - I downloaded and installed Tiny7 rev01 (but removed the included registry tweaks)
    - Installed the SD card reader driver, the webcam driver and the touch pad driver (the other drivers are already included)
    - Enabled ReadyBoost on a 2 GB SD card
    - Disabled lots of services and switched to the basic theme
    - Disabled NTFS “last time accessed”
    - And then I installed FlashFire, a program that really speeds up Windows (if you have a SSD)

Now, Windows 7 boots up in less than a minute and is great for surfing on the internet or typing something.
I also still have 4.48 GB free.

There are actually numerous particulars like that to take into consideration. That may be a great level to convey up. I supply the ideas above as basic inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you convey up where an important factor will be working in sincere good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I’m certain that your job is clearly identified as a fair game. Each girls and boys feel the impact of only a second’s pleasure, for the remainder of their lives.

Hi, thought I’d share this. My wife’s AAO running Vista (as supplied) got progressively slower until it reached the point that it was simply un-useable. She shelved it and we got a notebook instead. I tried resurrecting it while I had the chance and discovered that the RSS feeds my wife had subscribed to were archiving emails in the RSS folder in Outlook, there were almost 4000 of them. I deleted the lot and now the speed seems fine. HTH.
