How to Install Windows XP on an Acer Aspire One
I picked up (actually I received it as an early Christmas present from my mother after sending her the link in my Christmas list) the Acer Aspire One A1101 (in white) from Newegg, where they had it on sale for $249 + free shipping during the Black Friday sales that were going on. This model came with Linux Linpus and the 8GB SSD HD.
While I know there’s a lot of people that think Linux is just swell, I’m just so much more familiar with Windows, the software and the environment, so the first install for this machine was to toss out the original OS and install Windows XP.
The first hurdle obviously in installing a new OS on the AAO is that it has no optical drive. This requires that you create a bootable USB memory stick with the installation files to complete the install. Any USB thumb drive should work, I used a Kingston Datatraveler 1GB for my install.
To create the bootable USB thumb drive, you’ll need the USB Multiboot Tool, available here:
http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4900
Update
You can get download the multiboot tool directly from either here or here or here.
The Multiboot Tool is a batch file that will take you step-by-step on creating the bootable partition and then copying over the Windows files from your CD. You may also want to check out the N-Lite application to create a stream-lined version of windows that will be smaller and a bit faster on your AAO. N-Lite is a free application.
Once your USB thumb drive is ready to go, change the boot order in the bios (Press F2 on startup and move the USB port to the first bootable position), and then install Windows normally. Make sure not to remove the USB drive until the installation is complete (this will be after about 3 restarts).
*Note: During the Windows install, make sure that when you delete both existing partitions that come on the SSD HD and create a new single partition formatted in the FAT32 format and *NOT* NTFS. NTFS will be very slow on the SSD. I will post tips about speeding up Windows on the AAO in another post, however, it’s important that you format the drive in FAT2 during the installation.
I followed this youtube video and found it very helpful during the installation:
Once Windows has finished loading for the final time, you can remove the USB stick, and on your next restart can change the boot order so that the SSD HD comes first. You may want to keep the Windows copy on your thumb drive so that you can use it if you ever need to recover or repair your copy of Windows.

Why would anyone want to put WinXP on the AA1?
December 29th, 2008 at 11:31 am
> Why would anyone want to put WinXP on the AA1?
Why not? The non-SSD versions of the AA1 come pre-installed with WinXP, so for those that have the SSD version with Linux, installing WinXP is relatively simple and runs just fine. For me it just s a much more comfortable environment.

Your video is wonderful and help me to remove Linux and install Windows XP into a gift from my relatives (it is Malata 120 G HD). Sorry, I did not know the brand before I had it on my hand, the netbook is OK but it seems the USB port has some problem. I guess there is no complain as it is free, right?
I did use nLite to integrate XP & SP3 I downloaded. I checked other website (in Chinese), it mentioned that to have a booted USB, it required at least SP2 integrated or Windows XP SP2 disk.
I followed exact steps that you showed in the vedio except I did not have choice for FAT32 as my machine does not have SSD, so I used NTFS. Also, this machine will take USB HD as Hard-Drive and will boot first before the 120 G HD, so I did not see those .dll serrors creen you had.
You will tweak the XP as you mentioned in video, can you show or explain how to do?
Again, just leave a message to appreciate your sharing and hope you did replace your web-cam.

March 6th, 2009 at 9:27 am
To Rick Wells. I too had the problem of my Aspire One, Linux, suddenly not connecting to wifi through my WLAN system, wireless, at home. The problem was resolved when I got a copy of the Acer restore disk, loaded it to a thumb drive and then loaded it into the Aspire One. Ever since the restore it’s been working the way it originally did.

Where do I get the authorized NT install which came with the Acer Aspire One? There was no CD.
March 20th, 2009 at 8:19 am
Jay, you can get replacement cds from Acer. If you just want WinXP, you can purchase it for about $100 (USD) from Frys, TigerDirect, etc. Make sure you purchase the OEM version though.
March 21st, 2009 at 12:24 am
I am also getting blue screen!!! I have the winXP edition with 8gb peice of shit lol and with the recovery discs acer provides fills up the 8gb and runs slow as molasses so I tried to put XP pro and media center on it and it gives blue screen. also tried installing on an external 500gb hd and making it C: and not even creating a partition on SSD drive but windows wants to use it anyway. it will get up to copying files for install and then blue screen. I need help please
p.s. I want to know where i can buy an exactSSD drive like the one in the one(8gb) only bigger? Does anyone know what it is called or the model/serial number. Acer won’t tell me anything!!!!!
March 22nd, 2009 at 8:24 am
Donavan,
There seems to be an issue with loading winxp on the aspire one with the method above. One workaround I’ve found is to use a 2GB or less thumbdrive. Not sure what the root cause is yet.

It sounds like you’re creating problems yourself by trying to solve this issue instead of looking at why their is a problem in the first place.
March 26th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
great work with the info and vid tut.
to fix the boot.ini file >>
start > run > msconfig > click ‘boot.ini’ tab and remove the second repair line from the entries.
hope that helps.
March 29th, 2009 at 11:27 pm
Hey Savedor – Donavan, have you solved your issue?
I’m having the same problem and I think it might be the extra ram I installed on it. Have you guys done that to your netbooks or have you bought it with the ram upgraded?
It seems that the kingston ram is not compatible after all, even though it recognises it.
I don’t want to disassemble it again only to check because it’s a pain in the ass, so I thought i’d check with you guys if that might be the problem.

damn that blue screen of death! it always appear right after it reaches the point where it says setup is starting windows!!!! i just want to reformat my aspire one a150 and to partition the 120gb for a backup and an ubuntu for dual boot! why won’t it allow me?? – its so unfair!!!!!
April 9th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
I’ve found the fix for the blue screen of death on the Acer Aspire One A150L. You have to go the BIOS and change the SATA type to IDE (which I think just emulates IDE) from the default AHCI. What keeps crashing when trying to install Windows is the fact that the installer cannot detect any hard drives and then goes kapoot. After knocking my head against the wall for days, I’m right now installing the setup files…Good luck folks…

I have just purchased as acer 1 with lynux platform because l am having severe cardiac problems which can be affected by the strangest technology. When l got the machine l thought a memory stick would allow me to download films, which l could watch and then either store or dispose of as and when. However when l first tried to dowload a film a program appeared on the stick which although only shows initials of the programme it relates to, it could well relate to me pacer, which quite frankly scares me quite a lot. I keep the regulation 6″ from all and any outside games, films, downloads, and use to obtain email without the stick seems fine. Are you aware of any issues. I would much prefer Windows.

Hi!
This tutorial is very informative.
I’ve bought my Acer Aspire One recently (the HDD version), it has yet to ship.
I’m not a computer layman, but i think this video really helped me sort some issues i was wondering about, and since I had some motherboard problems trying this on my desktop I hope it’ll work better with Acer.
I’m looking worward to trying your method on my netbook, when it finally finds it’s way to me

PS
I wonder if a Service Pack version may something to do with the blue screens popping out after the installation… Apparently only SP2+ will work properly with sata drives.
I’ll try to install a nLited sp2 to sp3 version.

hi, i just had a small tips that might help AOA150 user to do recovery on their netbook. Still using the procedure that is being asked, instead of option 1, 2, 3 after booting up your netbook choose option 4 for directly go to Acer eRecovery Management. Try it and you will find it perfectly install back your operating system to normal. I’ve done that after getting screen of missing dll all the time rebooting and installing new window with the abvove method. and now my AOA150 as good as new… foolow the instruction ahead and configure then to you suits. good luck!!!! can contact me at faddiln@yahoo.com if you want me to assist.

Hi i have a acer aspire one with linux as the Os on it and i want to get rid of linux alltogether but is it a good idea to do this. And do a fresh boot and have windows xp pro as the Os i know how to format windows does anyone know how to get the Cmd up or does linux have one so i can format the HD. And another question how much disk space does windows xp use because it is hardly worth me upgrading to xp pro if theres not going to be enough HD space for windows updates

Probably on the higher capacity hard disk netbooks (e.g., 80 GB) NTFS would be a bit more efficient, but on the 8 GB SSD … Wow. The performance advantage in choosing FAT32 is intimidating. NTFS was ludicrously slow. I choose the wrong one at first and had to go through all the installation again, but it was totally worth it.
September 29th, 2010 at 10:03 pm
Was pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to stop the BSOD when trying to install Win XP on my aspire one. Looked every where for the answer, find it here. Just changed my sata settings to IDE and it worked first time. Thanks

Notice:
I’ve evaluated XP for some time now on AA110 and if you didn’t knew, it’s slow as a dead turle.
The built in SSD has horrid write performance, and even on every tweek possible, it still stalls way to often.
I’m giving up on the built in SSD and will mount (solder) a high speed USB-stick inside of it. The USB2 supports up to 40MB/s and there are USB3-memories now that fixes it and are quite cheap.
I concidered the solution of replacing the ssd with a compact-flash, but too much work and more expensive.

i seem to have a problem now aftter the usb instalationi installed a driver package for acer aspire after the xp installation. forgot to replace the usb where i saved the driver installer. there was a disk error. replaced the usb. and when xp was loaded, it already showed two OS choices:
one, for windows xp professional and two, for usb not to repair windows xp professional
everything seems pretty. it’s just that these two os choices irk me. is there something i can do to get rid of the second choice. or do i need to do some repairs?
thanks.

Hey just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your article seem to be running off the screen in Chrome. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know. The layout look great though! Hope you get the problem resolved soon. Many thanks
